NR 4 in Kampong Speu closed due to flooding
On Friday, July 20, the Kampong Speu provincial authorities have closed a section of National Road 4 (Phnom Penh- Sihanoukville) to all traffic.
The motorway near Kilometre 90, in Treng Trayeung commune, Phnom Sruoch district, is flooded due to the heavy rainfall of the past few days and must be closed down.
All travellers are advised to use National Roads 3 and 41 to go to Koh Kong and Preah Sihanouk province.
Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport inspected the flooded area on Friday morning and announced that technicians from his ministry will assess the damages to roads and bridges, and have them repaired when the weather situation is calmer.
National Road 4 will be widened to 11 meters width (currently only 7) and elevated. The World Bank has funded $110 million to rehabilitate the thoroughfare.
The government issued a statement to all provinces affected by floods to continue to brace for the worst as a storm is brewing off the coast of China’s Hainan island.
The floods, which started earlier this week, have affected multiple provinces, leading to the closure of parts of National Road 4 in Preah Sihanouk province and the evacuation of thousands of villagers in Preah Sihanouk, Koh Kong and Battambang provinces.
